Count number of characters in variable sas

The COUNTC function counts individual characters in a character string, whereas the COUNT function counts substrings of characters in a character string. Examples The following example uses the COUNTC function with and without modifiers to count the number of characters in a string.i use the length function to extract a string of characters indeed. code like: variable 'name' includes the character value'var1' but i can not get the right result. thank you count number of characters in variable sas

use the COUNTC function to count the number of times one or more characters appear in a string; Our to do list for this lesson. Read the paper An Introduction to SAS Character Functions written and presented by Ron Cody at the SAS Global Forum 2007 Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Dec 24, 2013 As promised, here are previous implementations that were required to access the number of variables in the dataset. These methods of finding the count of variables in a SAS Dataset are still valid, just not necessarily ideal. Getting Variables using Arrays

The third statement, count 1, creates the variable count and adds one to each observation as SAS processes the data step. There is an implicit retain statement in this statement. This is why SAS does not reset the value of count to missing before processing the next observation in the data set.

Sep 19, 2011 Count missing values for all variables The MEANS procedure computes statistics for numeric variables, but other SAS procedures enable you to count the number of missing values for character and numeric variables. The FREQ procedure is a SAS workhorse that I use almost every day. To get the FREQ procedure to count missing values, use three tricks:

In SAS, we have to go to a little extra effort to get the number of missing and nonmissing values for character variables. We can use proc format to make a format for character variable to be either nomissing or missing and then use that format with proc freq as illustrated below.

Although it is obvious that the number of digits would not be greater than 32, still if you would like you can increase the count. Using the compress function to strip off the blank characters; Using the length function to count the number of digits

1 Response to SAS: Count Distinct Values of Variables Josh Grab 1 August 2019 at 14: 48. Nice post. Your PROC FREQ solution could also use the builtin variables ALL, CHARACTER, NUMERIC to avoid having to list (or even know the names of) individual variables. I don't know of a way to do the same via PROC SQL. Reply Delete.
