M. C. Higgins is a bildungsroman (comingofage novel) that covers three eventful days in the life of teenager Mayo Cornelius Higgins. It is set in the Appalachian Mountains on Sarah's Mountain, a fictional mountain in Kentucky, near the Ohio River, that is being encroached upon by a mining company.

When M. C. 's greatgrandmother escaped from slavery long ago, she came to the mountain and made it her home. And now, it's M. C. 's home, but not for long. As Mayo Cornelius Higgins sits on his gleaming, fortyfoot steel pole, towering over his home on Sarah's Mountain, he sees, stretched before him, rolling hills and shady valleys.

To sum this book up in one word, I would say, Confusing. For most of the book, I had no idea what was going on. I didn't really care, either, because I was bored, and the 40' pole was so unrealistic, I didn't even believe it was a real thing. I would not recommend M. C. Higgins, the Great to anyone.

May 14, 2009 M. C. Higgins, the Great M. C. Higgins didn't seem all that great to me, unfortunately. I just didn't like the guy that much, even if polesitting and wearing lettuce leaves stuck in rubber bands around your wrists greeting the sun was interesting.
